Custom properties are one of the most widely used features of SOLIDWORKS. In this session we will learn how to optimize work with different types of custom properties (file specific, configuration specific, cut list custom properties). We will look at advanced techniques, macros, tools, and tips & tricks which would help manage custom properties more efficiently: linking custom properties values (e.g. cut-list custom properties and file custom properties), linking notes to custom properties in the drawings, reading/writing custom properties from Windows File Explorer and Excel, batch editing custom properties of hundreds of files in a matter of seconds.

This topic provides a beginner-friendly introduction to SOLIDWORKS API. No previous knowledge of API or programming is required. We will learn what is SOLIDWORKS API, SOLIDWORKS PDM Pro API and SOLIDWORKS Document Manager API, what are different types of applications can be developed using SOLIDWORKS API (macros, add-ins, stand-alone executables), what are typical use cases. Tips will be shared which will allow users to benefit from SOLIDWORKS API and macros in their organization even without the knowledge of programming and SOLIDWORKS API using built-in features and SOLIDWORKS partner products. We will share useful resources that will help you to streamline your SOLIDWORKS API skills.

Macro features are one of the most underrated yet the most powerful functions of SOLIDWORKS API. Those enable whole new scope for automation and enhancement for SOLIDWORKS. In this session, attendees will be introduced to macro features. Differences between VBA and COM-based macro features will be explained in detail based on sample use cases. Macro features can be used to embed and run a custom macro directly from the SOLIDWORKS file, to enable additional IP protection and security, creating fully parametric custom features which will reside in SOLIDWORKS tree and behave in the same way as any other standard feature of SOLIDWORKS and much more. Finally, we will build an example macro feature from scratch using the free and open-source xCAD.NET framework which allows to easily create property manager pages, previews, and generate parametric geometry for your macro feature.
